UMCP graduate students are not paid enough to deal with the area's high cost of living. Also, UMCP is starting to lose good prospective graduate students because they can't afford to live in this area. This is partly a housing issue, but this is also a stipends issue. A report by the Chronicle for Higher Education looked at stipends at the nation's leading universities. The University of Maryland was not included, but the study is very revealing.
