Master of Philosophy

The Academic Standards Committee recommends that the University of Maryland institute a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree to be awarded to graduate students who have completed all of the requirements for the Ph.D. except the prospectus and dissertation. The degree will recognize the completion of a significant amount of academic work beyond a master’s degree for all Ph.D. students. It also will allow students who have completed all of their course work and comprehensive exams and who, for any reason, are unable to complete the Ph.D. to leave the University with a degree. While the committee hopes that most departments will make the degree available for their students, it recognizes that some departments may prefer not to award the degree and provides for them to opt out of the program.

Catalogue Description

The Master of Philosophy is a degree awarded en route to the Ph.D. The minimum general requirements for this degree are the satisfactory completion of all requirements for the Ph.D. except the prospectus and dissertation, i.e., all academic course work and comprehensive exams must be completed satisfactorily. Students who enter the Ph.D. program without a master’s degree will not generally have satisfied these requirements until after at least two years of study. Students who complete a master’s degree before entering the Ph.D. program must complete all additional course requirements for the PhD and comprehensive exams. In no case will the degree be awarded for less than one year of full-time registration in a Ph.D. program. Not all departments offer the M.Phil degree.
