GRADUATE STUDENT GOVERNMENT (GSG) UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND COLLEGE PARK REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT I6 SEPTEMBER 2005
1) The ExecCom’s official Strategic Plan for the year is available on the GSG homepage.
2) Wed. and Thurs. of this week, the GSG co-sponsored welcome events at Grad Hills/Gardens with ResLife and the University Police. We provided pizza and information and other publicity hand-outs. Turn out was exceptional and I think the events were very successful. But more importantly, I think the partnerships that we are developing with these units are, and will continue to be, successful.
3) This past month, Vice President Pitts and I met individually with Graduate Ombudsperson Joann DeSiatto and University Chief Information Officer Jeff Huskamp. These meetings were the first in a series to introduce GSG Executive Officers to University Officials. The meeting were very productive and I’m looking forward to having similar meetings with the other GSG Vice President and other University administrators during the coming months.
4) Recent Appointments: The following people have been appointed to the GSG Presidential Cabinet in order to help me coordinate our efforts across campus.
Laura Moore, Presidential Advisor on Senate Related Issues Jon Lemich, Athletics Council Disha Pan, Senate Student Affairs Committee Ann Nutter, Senate Campus Affairs Committee Naresh Cuntoor, Senate Educational Affairs Committee Austin Parker, Information Technology Council Susannah Berwager, Stamp Student Union Advisory Board
I’ve also nominated our own Kevin Pitts to serve on the Senate’s ad hoc Committee on Student Rights and Responsibilities that you may have read about in the paper.
5) I’m still looking for Cabinet members to appoint to the following postions:
Rep. to the Campus Recreation Advisory Board Rep. to the Campus Student Technology Fee Advisory Committee Rep. to the Campus Parking Advisory Committee
All appointments require a minimum amount of time, perhaps one meeting per month at the maximum. And it’s essential that we have graduate representation on each body. Those who have been interested in the Lot 3/Lot 4 change by the CRC might be especially interested in the Parking Committee and the Recreation Advisory Board. If you’re interested, please let me know after the meeting today.
6) The Graduate School is still looking for graduate students to sit on the Graduate Council, perhaps the most influential body in writing and executing policy for graduate education and employment on this campus. I served on the Council last year and will serve again this year and have found it to be a very rewarding experience. If you’re interested, or know someone in your dept. that might be, please let me know and I’ll forward names to the Dean.
Also, the Office of Student Conduct is looking for a few good grads to serve on Judicial Boards to help insure that 1) grads are represented in the process; and 2) that grads brought up on charges are judged by a board of their peers. If you’re interested in this, or know someone who might be, please let me know.
7) With the approval of the ExecCom, I’ve issued several Executive Orders, which are all available online. I’ll bring two of these to your attention:
One requires regular, bi-weekly meetings of the ExecCom.
The other requires that we will, later this semester, publish time sheet reports so that you can see what we’re doing on your behalf as well as information on how much we all get paid.
Check these out if you’re interested and I’ll take questions about them next time we meet.
