1) Committee Performance A) Collect and disseminate current best practices from all GSG Committees and encourage the Committees to implement these best practices where appropriate in the pursuit of their statutory obligations. B) Encourage and assist all GSG Committees in the development of subcommittee structures when appropriate and useful in the execution of Committee responsibilities. C) Encourage and assist every GSG committee in the production of (at least) one piece of legislation, or the accomplishing of a major project or goal, over the course of the semester. D) Under the direction of the GSG Vice President for Committee Affairs, develop a seniority system for committee assignments to ensure that 1) senior Representatives are included on every GSG Committee, and 2) Committee expertise is passed from one GSG Legislative Assembly session to the next.
2) Student Affairs Issues A) In conjunction with the GSG Graduate Student Affairs Committee, continue to monitor graduate student housing developments within the Division of Student Affairs and the Department of Resident Life to ensure that the GSG maintains its central role in policy formation. B) In conjunction with the GSG Graduate Student Affairs Committee, continue to negotiate on behalf of graduate student employees for improved working conditions, compensation, and the retention of employee benefits. C) Work to secure COLA increase parity between faculty/staff and graduate assistants (of all classifications).
3) Secure at least one GSG Voting Departmental Representative from every single department on campus, and encourage all registered Departmental Representatives to regularly attend meetings of the GSG Legislative Assembly. Recruitment shall be conducted under the leadership of the GSG Vice President for Public Relations and shall include, but not be limited to, the identification of unrepresented departments, email solicitations, personal visits, and other such public relations media as deemed appropriate.
4) Partnerships and Collaboration A) Strengthen formal relationships with the Graduate University Senators by hosting a GSG-sponsored caucus of graduate leaders, encouraging Graduate Senators to attend Senate meetings, and identifying and supporting qualified and dedicated Graduate Senator candidates for next year’s Senate. B) Strengthen ties with the International Graduate Student Association in order to better identify international student issues and how the GSG can best advocate for the interests of these constituents. C) Strengthen formal relationships and two-way communication with graduate student organizations by calling for the first Council of Presidents meeting of the leadership of all registered graduate student organizations. Our goal will be to better identify those things that the GSG can do to help graduate student organizations meet their programmatic and policy objectives while finding ways to harness the power and networking of these organizations to bolster the GSG’s position as the central advocate for graduate student welfare. B) Forge partnerships with the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) to help better prepare and assist graduate lecturers and teaching assistants, and with the Career Center to develop programs to prepare graduate students seeking academic placement and other post-matriculation positions. These relationships will be built by inviting representatives of each organization to present at the GSG Legislative Assembly and by working with the GSG Academic Affairs committee to develop programmatic initiatives which will benefit graduate students.
5) Work with the Coordinator for Graduate Student Involvement (GSI) and Graduate School senior staff to improve graduate student orientation by identifying what information is of most benefit to graduate students and developing ways to best present such information as to be effective.
6) With the aid of GSG Executive Staff, survey the policies, practices, and governance structures of all graduate programs to find their unique ideas and effective strategies. The results of this survey will be turned over to the GSG Graduate Student Affairs Committee for their consideration per policy initiatives and compiled into a best practices document with will be distributed to graduate students at-large and retained on file at the GSG main office as a resource for graduate students.
7) In conjunction with the GSG Communications Committee, upgrade the GSG website and develop standard operating procedures that will make better use of that medium to inform graduate students about the GSG and its central role as the singular organization on campus that helps graduate students get together, advance their interests, socialize, network, and have fun.
8) Develop a GSG Transition Program for Executives in order to simplify and streamline the Executive transition process, to ensure that vital programs and initiatives are properly transferred from one administration to the next, and to ensure that important information and practices are not lost during the transfer of GSG Executive authority.
