GRADUATE STUDENT GOVERNMENT (GSG) UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND COLLEGE PARK REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT 5 NOVEMBER 2004
A meeting has been set with Dean Wylie with several graduate students and me to discuss problematic departments and colleges in regard to assistantship 20-hour workweek overloads. The meeting will take place next Friday, December 10th at 2 PM. If you, or any of your colleagues, would like attend this meeting, please send me an email no later than Thursday morning at gsg-prez@gsg.umd.edu.
At the last meeting, I reported that every college on campus had a Technology Advisory Committee, on which graduate student representation is mandatory, and which are charged with distributing technology fees, both graduate and undergraduate. However, a question was later raised in the forums about the accuracy of this statement. I’m happy to report that after meeting with Vice President for Administrative Affairs John Porcari this week I can safely say that this claim was correct in spirit. In fact, all of the colleges except Public Policy do have such committees in place and do include graduate student membership. Public Policy’s delay seems based on their interim Dean status, a problem which VP Porcari assures me will be resolved in the very near future. I’ve also been in contact with Vice President and Chief Information Officer Jeff Huskamp and a university-wide technology committee, which will also include graduate student representation, will be up and running by the end of January.
