I. AD Update a. Results of Request for Proposal for Medical Services for Student Athletes...UM medical System was chosen, a great new team of surgeons and a new Asst. Dir. of Sports Medicine. b. New Coaches and Administrators Handbook: Policies, Processes and Regulation was gone over with each sports team. c. Gambling Presentation to ICA Coaches, student athletes and support staff by former Mob/prison guy...heard wonderful things about the presentation. d. Beer Ads...still not happening at the UMD. e. Goal Posts...for student safety, the permanent, indestructable posts were chosen. Also we dont have time to have the collapsable posts before students enter the field and therefore would likely result in injury. f. An article was handed out concerning a 27-year study of Women in Intercollegiate Sport with such interesting facts such as: Division I contains the fewest programs lacking a female in the administrative structure or there are more female college presidents of Division IA schools than there are female athletic directos in Division IA programs. g. Also passed out articles regarding competitive cheer...very postive articles and a cheerleading team representative commented on how well recruiting went this year. h. The Council is also looking into a new hazing statement...passed around a copy of a statement from Vermont. More on this to come... i. UMD also finished in the Elite 25 among all Division I schools in the nation according to the US Sports Academy FDirector's Cup Standings.
II. Other Items Discussed a. The drug testing policy proposed last year was approved by Dr. mote. b. The Student Athlete Opportunity fund is up for discussion again as to how the money should be spent and to which teams/genders, etc. c. Looked at Graduation Reports...doing much better in graduating athletes within 4-6 years. In 2004, all UMCP student athlets, the percent was 68%...for all UMCP students, 70%. d. Need to re-evaluate GPA requirements now that our numbers barely exceed the NCAA...should we keep it, change it? e. NCAA legislation- 2 main issues of interest...should we have 12 football games and should athletes be allowed 5 years of elegibility. f. Report from Sportsmanship Committee was favorable with the announcement by Coach Fridge that the Rock and Roll II song would not be played. Response by students was not nearly as bad as expected. Now, to get Coach Williams on board... g. Comcast Seating adjustment. I have a brochure that I can show you, but changes will not take affect until 05-06 season and really only effect staff/faculty who are not Terrapin Club members.
