Free Film, The Spook Who Sat by the Door and Dinner
Friday, Feb. 20, 2007, 6:30 pm, 0106 Francis Scott Key Building
Event Description: This week in celebration of Black History Month, the BGSA is sponsoring a film showing.
We will be serving a soul food dinner (fried chicken, collard greens, and potato salad). Please bring your own drink.
Background on this controversial film:
The movie is based on the novel by Sam Greenlee. Published in 1968, the story takes place at the height
of the Black Power Movement. The Spook Who Sat by the Door satirizes institutional racism and
black militancy through the tale of Dan Freeman. Freeman is recruited to a selective program of the
CIA as the token black person. Freeman assumes a non-threatening and compliant persona in order to
attain the knowledge and skills provided by the program. Freeman later starts his own black
revolutionary group using the tactics and knowledge he attained in the CIA.
Following the movie, we will have a discussion on black militancy, meanings of freedom,
racial identification, class, and gender.
